There are currently 156 million people in the world with intellectual disabilities. That’s 3% of the global population. Almost 8 million of those individuals live in the United States. Tragically, most people with intellectual disabilities continue to be marginalized and maligned by society, living life as an invisible minority.
Loneliness is one of the largest problems faced by people with intellectual disabilities. Best Buddies was born out of desire to address a basic need we all have to belong; to provide friendship as a solution to loneliness and isolation. Founder Anthony K. Shriver believes that through the simple act of friendship, we can improve the status of people with intellectual disabilities.
Students who participate in Best Buddies become adults who raise children with a new perspective based on compassion and integration. They become employers who understand the undeniable value of hiring people with intellectual disabilities.
