Conservation in India
This year’s An Evening at the Central Park Zoo celebrates the Wildlife Conservation Society’s (WCS’s) unwavering commitment to conservation in India, as led by 2007 J. Paul Getty Award winner, Dr. K. Ullas Karanth. WCS has been working in India since the 1960s with a comprehensive portfolio of activities that encompasses the major global conservation strategies of WCS: scientific research, national capacity building, policy interventions, site-based conservation, and developing new models of wildlife conservation.
As part of WCS’s efforts to save India’s critically endangered tiger, Dr. Karanth has conducted India-wide surveys of tigers to better determine their numbers and habitat needs. Using camera traps to capture their unique stripe pattern on film, Dr. Karanth has improved accuracy in assessing the number of tigers in India’s Nagarahole National Park. His efforts have facilitated the creation of three protected areas in the Western Ghats. He has also done innovative work on voluntary resettlement, benefiting people and wildlife. Dr. Karanth is now bringing his skills and experience to WCS's ambitious new "Tigers Forever" program where he aims to help others replicate his success and increase tiger numbers by 50 percent in seven other landscapes across Asia over the next ten years.
