About
SERGE STROSBERG “PARIS - NEW YORK”
Opening Night Private Reception Thursday March 27th, 2008 6:00-9:00pm,
hosted by KiptonART & Culture + Travel Magazine

New York, March 12, 2008—Belgian-born Parisian artist Serge Strosberg will be celebrating his move to this city with an exhibition entitled, simply, “Paris-New York” at his stunning studio loft in the heart of SoHo during the Armory, the International Art Fair of Contemporary Art.

Strosberg, 41, was born in Antwerp, Belgium and lived and worked in Paris for most of his life. He's had several group and solo exhibitions in France, Belgium, and the U.K., including such prestigious venues at the Orangerie of the French Senate at the Jardin du Luxembourg, Espace Saint-Honoré, Grand Palais in Paris, and the Biblioth¬èque Royale des Beaux-Arts and the Jewish Museum in Brussels. More recently, Serge has enjoyed critical success in Palm Beach, Boca Raton, and Miami exhibiting at the acclaimed Elaine Baker Gallery, the Museum of the Lighthouse Center for the Arts, and the Alliance Française gallery of Miami.

Serge graduated from the Académie Julian, the school in Paris where Matisse, Bonnard, Léger, and Gauguin studied. It was in Paris that Serge learned the Old Master's technique that the Flemish and German painters used and is, today; currently one of the only living artists that still utilizes the methods.

Besides illustrating ten international best-selling children's books, Serge has won numerous high-profile prizes including the Jan Cockx Award for Contemporary Painting by the director of the Museum of Contemporary Art in Antwerp. He has also garnered international press including an interview with National French Television Channel France 5, TV5, National Chinese television CCTV4 as well as write ups in the Palm Beach Daily News, The Sun Sentinel, Art of the Times, and The Miami Herald.

Strosberg's paintings blur the line between portraiture and allegory, and his subjects are primarily, like himself, a dark skinned Jew with Dutch-Portuguese and Polish roots, members of the minority. His sense of not quite belonging is represented in his pieces and his work often draws similarities with other Jewish humanist painters such as Modigliani and Lucian Freud. Indeed, from April 6-June 29, 2008, Serge will have the honor of being included in a show entitled “Humanisme et Expressionisme” displaying works by Soutine, Modiglani, Balthus, Lucian Freud, R.B. Kitaj, Alex Katz, Pissarro, Lasar Segall, and Raphael Soyer at Museum of Pontoise near Paris. Strosberg, Paris-New York will showcase works done in oil and tempera between 2006 and 2007, in Paris, Southern Florida, and recently in New York. The bulk of the exhibition is comprised of his most recent series entitled "Sins of Paris." The pieces illustrate a young "fashion victim", a 28 year-old Parisian actress amidst a contemporary adaptation of historic scripture's seven deadly sins, in addition to a Chinese nude ensemble and a multiple scene painting of the Paris Metro. The highlight of the opening will be the piece “Annabel and Giselle,” a gigantic oil painting of socialite and actress Annabel Vartanian and Elite model Giselle. Twenty (20) percent of the proceeds from the sale of this painting will go to GMHC (Gay Men’s Health Crisis), a not for profit, volunteer supported and community based organization committed to national leadership in the fight against AIDS.

The opening exhibition on March 27th will be hosted by KiptonART an ongoing champion of emerging-artist efforts, as well as Culture+Travel Magazine, the bible for people who love the arts and travel with a passion.
