Dr. Mehmet Oz is the Professor and Vice Chairman of Surgery at Columbia University, Director of the Cardiovascular Institute, and Founder and Director for the Complementary Medicine Program at New York Presbyterian Hospital. His research interests include heart replacement surgery, minimally invasive cardiac surgery, complementary medicine, and health care policy. He has also received several patents. He performs over 100 heart operations annually. Dr. Oz became alarmed several years ago at the increasing need to perform heart procedures on 30 year olds with arteries clogged from poor diets and sedentary lifestyles. . . lifestyles that seemed to be reinforced in American schools He created HealthCorps in response to his concerns.
Dr. Oz has authored over 400 original publications, book chapters, and medical books, including the award-winning Healing from the Heart and best-selling books, YOU: The Owner's Manual, YOU: The Smart Patient, YOU: On a Diet and YOU: Staying Young, The Owner's Manual for Extending Your Warranty. He has written numerous articles for consumer and medical publications, including Newsweek, O, The Oprah Magazine, and The New England Journal of Medicine. He contributes a bi-monthly column to Esquire magazine. He is also a regular contributor to The Oprah Winfrey Show and has been a guest host on the Charlie Rose Show. He is a chief medical consultant to Discovery Communications and has hosted several shows for Discovery Health.
Dr. Oz was born June 11, 1960 in Cleveland, Ohio; and received his undergraduate degree from Harvard University (1982). He obtained a joint MD and MBA (1986) from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine and Wharton Business School. He was awarded the Captain’s Athletic Award for leadership in college and was Class President followed by President of the Student Body during medical school. In addition to belonging to every major professional society for heart surgeons, Dr. Oz was elected as a Global Leaders of Tomorrow by the World Economic Forum, won the American Association for Thoracic Surgery Gross Research Scholarship, and has received an honorary doctorate from Istanbul University. He was voted “The Best and Brightest” by Esquire Magazine and was elected one of the Doctors of the Year by Hippocrates Magazine, and Healers of the Millennium by Healthy Living Magazine. He is annually elected as one of the best physicians in the USA by the Castle Connolly Guide as well as other major ranking groups.
