Jenna Fischer was born on March 7, 1974, in Fort Wayne, Indiana, but she grew up in St. Louis, Missouri. After graduating from Nerinx Hall High School, Jenna attended Truman State University. While initially aspiring to attend law school, Jenna Fischer went for a bachelor's degree in theater instead.

Jenna Fischer moved to Los Angeles upon graduation where she met her future husband, James Gunn, who became her eventual manager. Before establishing a stable career, Jenna worked at several different jobs while struggling to find her niche in the industry, eventually getting her big break with The Office, starring Steve Carell.
By Jenna Fischer’s own account, she was never the kind of actress who was the star of everything, but she often put on her own productions to get leading roles. Fortunately, many of her acting professors found her professional, animated, creative, energetic, and easy to direct.
Corroborating this account is Lee Orchard, a professor of theater who said, “When I think of Jenna, I think of somebody who’s fun to work with. You’d want to cast her on a project because you know you’d have a good time, and you know she’d be very coachable and directable and creative.”
